I originally intended for this to be my fall mix but as usual (and as predicted by my friends) I'm just now getting it out. Oh, well. Life seems to be drudging along regardless. At any rate, the mix itself was too large to upload as one zip file and I wrestled with the thought of either splitting it into two files or resizing all of the tracks to smaller bit rates. Well quality won and now you have to download two separate files for the complete mix. Remember to make sure it's marked for gapless playback in iTunes in order for it to play correctly. Enjoy.

Endless Summer

I know that Memorial Day is supposed to mark the official end of summer but it's still balls hot. And I'm still waist deep in summra time tracks that I'm sure I cannot hold onto until next year lest they lose their freshness. Therefor, what was supposed to be a four disc set is now five.

Think of it as a bonus disc.

Revenge of the Synth.

It's no secret that Dragonette is easily one of my favorite bands. Fixin to Thrill has been on repeat since its release in October of last year. They have just released an EP that is absolutely can't miss.


(This band is sexy as hell. Husband and wife Dan Kurtz and Martina Sorbara, and Joel Stouffer)


Mixin to Thrill includes several remixes of the first three singles "Fixin to Thrill", "Pick Up the Phone" and my personal favorite from the album "Easy." They are all amazeballs. My favorites include the Buffetlibre Mix, and the Arithmatix remix by Van She's Michael Di Francesco (which I included in my Summer Mix issue 2, Wiped Out.) In addition to that, there are three newly recorded tracks that the band has been playing at live shows. I have managed to miss them the last 2 times they were in the bay area, and am determined not to miss them again when they come back around at the end of September, even if it means I have to endure the Folsom Street Fair. Yikes. That, ladies and Gents, is dedication. Luckily I have a couple of friends who are willing to brave the leather clad streets with me in the name of fantastic music.

This remix actually took some time to grow on me. I am absolutely in love with the original and the remix is definitely of a different animal. I love how they use the bridge as the chorus but I actually really dislike the little blips that happen throughout the verses. In the end I still listen on repeat so...

There's Got To Be Something Better Than in the Middle.

Ok. Finally. I was kind of wrestling with this one for a while. Had a couple clear ideas and some self imposed restrictions (read: crazy) to deal with but I'm done. Just in time too cuz summer's almost bloody over. The final S.O.S. entry is basically how I hear the end of the season. A little more mellow. A little more acoustic a little less electric. I think it rounds out the other mixes quite well. I hope you like it. Enjoy.

No Mercy!

Worked till 9, 45 min drive home and I have to get up at 6 tomorrow to be back at work by 8. Awesome. So it looks like just a quick one and then off to bed with me. Another in my favorite 80s music soundtrack goodies, this one is inspired by miss Rachi. She reminded me of this track a while back and I'm gonna share it with the rest of you.

It comes from the soundtrack to "The Karate Kid." No, not the horrible remake that takes place in China (you realize that they practice Kung fu there, right? I digress) but the original 1984 masterpiece starring Ralph Macchio, Pat Morita and Elisabeth Shue.


That is a TERRIBLE tagline.

Of course I'm talking about the Joe Espisito song "You're The Best" used in the tournament montage from the end of the film. Just hearing it makes me want to move from New Jeresey to California, get bullied by the guy who played every bully in 80s movies, meet a pretty girl (with a seriously hot younger brother), befriend an elderly Japanese man, learn karate through varied household chores, and ultimately defeat above bully in a refereed tournament. Back In The Day When I Was Young...

I have been meaning to do this for some time now and have decided to move on it thanks to a reference a friend made today. (Natalie, you are my muse.)

Browsing through my iTunes it would seem that I have a great deal of love for 80s movie soundtracks. I have decided to share some of that love with you today.

My first entry comes from an gem called "Hiding out." The movie was released in 1987 and starred Jon Cryer in which he played a wall street broker who enrolls in his cousin's high school to avoid being murdered by the mob. Pretty sound plot, eh? it's a good movie, I Promise. Don't roll your eyes, pre "Two and a half Men" Jon Cryer was awesome, though we don't really talk anymore. And better still, his cousin is played by the FANTASTIC Keith Coogan, of "Adventures in Babysitting", and "Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead." Add this gorgeous pop single from the soundtrack and I'm all in.

"Catch me I'm falling" by Pretty Poison is spectacular. It's everything I could ask for in and 80s soundtrack jam. Spoken word intro, glitzy electro beat, faux record scratching and saccharin sweet vocal provided by one Jade Starling. Yes. Also, Pretty Poison is from Philly! What, WHAAAAT! I'm sorry. That won't happen again. (it might...) Even better the scene in which the track is featured is set at a roller skating rink! I practically lived there as a child. (no i didn't. i don't know why i lied to you just now...)

I'm included the music video in the post so in case you haven't actually seen the movie, they pretty much cover the ENTIRE thing in the 4 minute clip. Plus you get to see some pretty sick dance moves? Enjoy.

It's been five years since I originally started my SOS series of summer mix tapes. The original was indeed a labor of love and even included a hand made case for a select few. Yeah. I don't have the time nor the patience for that anymore. But I really do enjoy making summertime mixes and figured since five years is a nice round number I wouldn't stop at just the one seasonal mix this year. That's right I'm going for the full four again. Part 3 is called Wasteland and I really like it. I guess that's supposed to go without saying. I hope you do, too. Enjoy.

This one's been floating around the blogs for a bit now and who am I not to keep it going. I absolutely love this song. While the original is incredibly catchy in its own right, this remix manages to breath fresh life into a youthful favorite. And the beat makes me think of "Closer" by NIN, that's always a good thing! I heard this song on Sirius XM today while driving in my car. I have been listening to it on repeat ALL day. I know virtually nothing about this band but that's apparently what they want. They do most of their shows with some form of cover over their faces. They did SXSW with hamburgler/incredibles makeup over their eyes. Whateves, the song is catchy as hell. Push play. Bob head. Repeat.

Work and school have pretty much been kicking my butt lately which means I have very little time to even listen to music, much less blog about it. But I just finished finals and summer's right around the bend (hopefully, stupid rain!) and I love me a summer mix. I've had a lot of songs in the queue for a while now and eventually that list grew too large for one CD (I know no one uses them anymore but hey, just in case) so I split it into two mixes. So The Days Float Through My Eyes

If there's one thing I am certain of myself it's that I wear my music like a mood ring. A tricky thing, really. Does the ring turn the color of the mood you're currently experiencing? Or does your mood change to better match the color of the ring? I'd like to think that we have more control over our emotional state than most people give themselves credit for. If life is a series of choices, then I'm making an active decision to enjoy mine a bit more. I'd very much like to embrace the changes I see are necessary in my life rather than struggle against them. To be the change I want to see. Trust me, it's harder than it sounds.

I think that's why I enjoy this time of year so much. I am so in awe of the seamless transition from Winter's cold and dreary wet to the bright and beautiful Spring. Everything in nature seems to know its place. All of the tiny pieces fall in line behind the scenes to create the bigger picture. It always seems so effortless to me. I'd like my life to be more like that. I'm not expecting the changes to be quite so effortless, but I'd certainly like to facilitate them as best I can. That's where this mix comes from. Facilitating change. Making the mood ring as blue as I can get it. Enjoy.

Valentine's day is here again. Meh. It's not my favorite holiday, even when I am part of a pair. But I guess I can stay topical. I've got a few dance diddies to get your heart racing if nothing else tonight will.

Stacy Q. Two of Hearts. I don't know anything else she ever put out. I don't really care. I've loved that song ever since I was a gay youth. Recently it's been covered a couple times recently and I love those just as much.** Enjoy.

The 1st is by Norwegian ElectroPop-Tart Annie. It's got a serious freestyle sound behind the wheel while the vocals remain pretty true to the original. It was originally released as the first single in October from her as yet unreleased album Don't Stop. But the last time I checked up on the album, I didn't see the song on the track list. Hmmm... I've included the single version as well as my favorite remix (Duh!).

The second cover comes from the wonderful Buffetlibre Rewind. If you don't know what that is go do some digging. It's well worth your time! The song is the work of Electric Valentine and Ultraviolet Sound and while I don't know anything about the two groups who've come together to produce this most perfect pop track, I do know that it has been at the very top of my playlist since I downloaded it! The kid in me loves that it doesn't stray too far from the original version, but the grown up in me loves the retrofitted electro sound. Yeah, I just referenced a frosted miniwheats commercial, Jealous?!

Watch Out Boy, She'll Chew You Up.

Today I blog for a cause. Well sort of. When I heard Neko Case had a new album coming out I was excited. When I learned she was giving away her 1st single for free I was thrilled. When I learned that her label was going to donate $5 to Best Friends Animal Society for every music blog that reposts the single I decided to do my part for I am nothing if not philanthropic. Ok, so I just read that word in a book the other day. I am not alone in my desire to give back apparently. I can't click a link without stumbling on another music blog who is helping out by doing a post on this track. Awesomely donating to charity whilst making sure that your single is EVERYWHERE aside, Neko certainly doesn't dissapoint sound wise. "People Got a Lotta Nerve" is 2:30 of wonderful twangy guitars backing Case's soaring voice. She sings of elephants and killer whales and maneaters. I'm down for it all. If Prince's "When Doves Cry" and Depeche Mode's "Enjoy the Silence" had a beautiful, if not coke induced one night stand the result would surely be the 1st single from British newcomer La Roux.

So Crazy in Love

It funny sometimes the connections that lead you from one place to another. Like the other day I was searching for a remix of "Single Ladies" by Beyoncé (Don't judge me!!!) and ended up discovering a completely unrelated new artist I am exceptionally excited about.




His name is Gavin Castleton and I cannot stop playing his music. I stumbled upon his blog where he had posted a video cover of "Nothing Compares 2 u" and was hooked. I must've watched it 5 times all the way through back to back. And that's something as it clocks in at just over 9 minutes. From there I began to listen to the snippets he had available on his Myspace and now it seems I'm completely obsessed. He has a few albums out now (check out Hospital Hymns, it's gorgeous!!) but I am most interested in his forthcoming endeavor titled Home. His myspace is almost baren, spare a creepy hand rising from the dirt and this :

The bits and pieces I've heard from this album have me salivating at the thought of the outright feast. Ordinarily I would have no problem with searching for an advanced copy to quench my desires but at the artists specific request (as per his blog about the album's leak) I have decided to wait very patiently for it's Friday the 13th release date next month. I was able to track down some downloads made available from him that are completely guilt free and will share those with you now in the hopes that you too will be one of the 1rst in line to purchase Home when it drops.

Apparently 'tis the season again. Ask anyone who knows me and they will tell you that Christmas is not my favorite holiday. Not by a long shot. For me it's just another year flown by and I'm forced to listen to (mostly terrible) Christmas music all day at work. Maybe it was listening to Jessica Simpson X-mas bullshit at least 3 times per day that compelled to put together my own mix of a few of my very favorite holiday songs. Ones that don't make me wanna blow out my own eardrums. It started off quite small and somehow snowballed (no, that wasn't a pun!) into a full blown playlist as I scoured my iTunes and found gem after seasonal gem.

There are a few standards, if not obvious choices on the list. The Drifters' "White Christmas" always makes me think of Home Alone (or was it Home Alone 2? They're both great so who cares) and while there are tons of covers of "Last Christmas" I find the original Wham! version is perfection. And it wouldn't be Christmas without Brenda Lee's incomparable "Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree." My mother played her Christmas album every year on a loop and it has remained my favorite ever since.

I also threw in some newer stuff like the incredibly fun Rosie Thomas original "Why Can't It Be Christmastime All Year" (thank you Daniel), a fabulous remix of Kay Starr's "I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm" and a bouncy holiday 'fuck you' from one of my favorite new discoveries Hello Saferide. The one track I cannot seem to get enough of is the last one in the set. Originally from the movie "Toys," The Closing of the Year" has been humming around in my head for days now and always leaves me with a cheerful grin on my face and a childlike optimism for the season and the year to come.
