Kelly Clarkson has released the 1st single from her 3rd album My December! Against her label's wishes, Kelly is said to have written a good portion of the record herself describing the songs as "intimate, raw, and rock." If the first single is any indicator, her label has nothing to worry about. Here is Never Again and the remix which was curiously leaked before the single itself. Enjoy.

I downloaded a few songs from a random itunes search a few months ago and never really gave it a thorough listen until the past couple of weeks. I do that sometimes and then I kick myself because I could have been listening to great music! I feel like I've cheated myself out of quality time with a good friend.



That good, if not newly acquired friend is Ben Cooper. These days he's going by Radical Face, while before he was the voice behind Electric President. His latest endeavor, Ghost, is a beautiful and emotive record with a rather thought provoking idea "What if houses had memories?" What if the stories of our lives were embedded into the walls, like the grooves of a record, meant to play out again and again. The songs on Ghost unlock these memories, reminding the artist of where he comes from, what's behind him. Whether it be the memories of the current inhabitants or of those who have come home after being away for too long, whether good or bad, the house remembers everything and will remind you if listen well.

Musical Penance

After yesterday's complete self indulgence in my own guilty little pleasure, it's time to try and earn back the respect of my peers. Just a quick post of two tracks from two different upcoming albums I and very excited about.

The first is from everyone's favorite Icelandic export, Björk. Her new album, Volta, is set to release May 7th, 2007 and the first single shows great promise. While the last full studio release, Medúlla, was considered a concept album, using only vocal talent to produce the music for the all of the songs, the new record is set to be much more commercially appealing. Björk is even enlisting the talents of hip-hop producer extraordinaire, and everyone's current go to guy for seriously killer beats, Timbaland. Now, don't mistake commercially appealing for bland or think that Tim's influence is going to change our swan dress enthusiast too much, just listen to the first single and I think you'll agree, this is distinctly Björk.

The second artist whom I am very excited to hear from again is the one and only Tori Amos. Except, it's not the one and only Tori Amos who's releasing the new album, American Doll Posse on May 1st, 2007. It seems Miss Amos has taken on a few extra personalities for her latest venture. The American Doll Posse consists of Tori, Isabel, Santa, Clyde and Pip. Full explanations of these personas are available at Wiki or look for more info at her official website. Be sure to check out the various blogs and web pages belonging to these songstresses themselves, proving that although Tori may be crazy-for-days, at least she commits. You can check out a couple of the sample tracks to stream at AOL music. Bouncing off Clouds (voiced by Clyde) is wonderful and if the other tracks are anything like the first single Big Wheel (voiced by Tori herself), the new album is sure to be an instant favorite of mine!

Apparently, I'm a Duff Man!

(Really diggin' the dark air)

I'm certain that as I'm posting this I'm losing serious music credibility with some, but that's the price you pay for being eclectic. And by "eclectic", I mean a 26 year old gay man who can't help but love a good dance track! So here's what I know about miss Duff. I know that she was once the reigning queen of Disney and she was at one time bitter rivals with one Lindsay Lohan. (P.s. I was totally Team Duff, frankly because she's much cuter than that no talent Lohan.) I also know that, though I absolutely despise that Chad Michael Murray prick, I love the shit out of "A Cinderella Story." (Jenn T, I Blame You!!) But until recently I didn't know much of her music. About a week ago I saw the music video for the first single from her new album, Dignity, and it really wasn't bad. Actually, I was humming it all over the place for the next few days, so I decided to check out the rest of the album. When did Hilary Duff start making really good electro-pop!? Now, hear me out before you de-friend me from myspace! Yes, it's pop music, but it's really well crafted pop music! The music is rich with Electro-synth fuzz like on the aforementioned 1st single, With Love, and beats reminiscent of 80's dance tracks like Debbie Deb's When I Hear Music on the slow and steady Burned. The lyrics may not be profound, but they are certainly more grown up than I've heard of her in the past, and with a voice as sweet as pulled taffy, you'll soon forget you're singing along to themes that we all hoped to be past by 19. Let's face it, we're all still angst ridden teens, we just have jobs now. Find comfort in an artist who understands and can help you forget your problems. Dance it out people!

Nowhere, Man!

I love Target! (Duh!) I go there at least 4 times per week. And if they had the song from their latest commercial playing on a loop in the store, I might never leave. Unless you haven't bothered to turn on your TV since January 4th, when the Ad 1st ran with the Golden Globes, you must have seen it by now. It contains the sweetest cover of the Beatles song "Hello, Goodbye" that I have ever heard! I immediately "googled" the commercial in an attempt to find out where I could get this song, and after a few misleads I was able to track it down to a Bossa Nova/Jazz/ sometimes Jingle singer, Sophia Shorai. Unfortunately, the song seems to have exclusively recorded for Target, and is not available on any record. Hateful! So that is a serious bummer, but at least someone uploaded the full version to Youtube, so I can see/listen whenever I'd like. In the mean time I check everyday to make sure the recording hasn't been produced in its entirety. *sigh* If you haven't seen it yet, check it out below. So I had to go back to the dentist today. That's right, back! In the past 2 months I've spent a good deal of money and a fair amount of time at the dentist's office. He's a nice enough gentleman, I just don't know why he enjoys putting the hurt on me. 2 hours and 3 fillings later the corners of my mouth are sore, my gums are bleeding and the entire right hand side of my face is completely numb! I would swear that I had just had a stroke if only it were on the left! A Case of You

I keep a playlist in my itunes for things I am not certain I want to purchase. Contained in this list of 30 second snippets , lies a track by Neko Case. Idley biding its time there since September of 2005, waiting for me to realize the beauty that lies beyond the vague sample someone decided was enough to illustrate her talent. It wasn't until I received a copy of Fox Confessor Brings The Flood from my dear friend and sometimes musical sensei Daniel that I came to know of one few men have had the pleasure.

The reason I had yet to purchase this song is simple, it doesn't showcase Case's remarkable voice. It's really quite incredible. She sounds as if from another time, when Patsy Cline, Brenda Lee and Loretta Lynn were in their prime, and yet her music is completely distinctive. Her lyrics create such textured imagery and the drive in her voice ensures that there is surely not a word wasted.

I had a terrible time trying to decide what songs I was going to include for you to sample. Since receiving the album for Christmas, I haven't taken it out of the Cd player in my car. I have listened to it at least 10 times all the way through (which isn't difficult as it clocks in at just over 35 minutes) so these songs only really exist to me as a complete story and it's very difficult for me think of them as otherwise. I honestly couldn't tell their names, or where one song ends and the next begins until I ripped it into my computer and clicked on them song by song. I have chosen 4 tracks that I cannot stop humming to myself and I hope they represent her well. Please go out and purchase this album!!

The first time I heard the single "17 Years" by New York based electronic group, Ratatat, I was in love. It was just what I had been searching for. An electronic sound with a distinctive guitar base. Not the usual "untcha untcha" of boring techno, but a brilliant blend of synth and rock. Then I listened to the rest of their debut self titled album, and was mildy disappointed. All of the songs kind of sounded the same, and none of them had the energy of the first single so I more or less dismissed them as a one hit wonder. *Sigh* Then they released Ratatat Mixtape Vol. 1. A collection of hip-hop and rap artists remixed by the duo. It showed promise and so I remained patient.

Then a couple of months ago, the internet started buzzing with leaked material from their sophmore release Classics. SA-WEE-TAH! This was exactly what I had been waiting for. Classics was officialy released August 22, 2006 and the songs are as varied in texture and pace as they are part of a complete unit. They seem to complete the album story from beginning to end. Fran-Tastic! Seriously, go out and purshace this album!

Starting now I'm going to be posting on a more regular basis. At least a couple of times per week, and some with reocurring themes. While sampling the new Bloc Party album "A Weekend in the City" (02/05/07 scheduled release date) I came across a riff in the song "Hunting for Witches" that caught my attention. This is the 2nd time in recent months I have heard a very distinct similarity to the strings in the Eurythmics' track "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)." The other songs that seems to be using the sample is pop newbie Stefy's "Chelsea."

Now I'm not saying this is a bad thing in either instance, they're both enjoyable songs in their own space, and that strings line is one of my favorites, I just hope Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart are pickin up some sort of royalties.

Feel the weapon's sensation

On any given weekend, my boyfriend, Daniel, can be found DJing in the city. His passion for music rivals my own, and although we have vastly different tastes, we occasionally see eye to eye on a particular artist/song. Shiny Toy Guns "Le Disko" is just such a song. About 5 months ago he made me a mix cd of some of his favorite electronic-esque songs and this track immediately caught my attention. It's got a great beat, a great hook and a very dirty guitar. I love a good dirty guitar! Well technically I love a dirty anything. But I digress. This is actually the 3rd incarnation of "We are Pilots." It was previously released in January 2005 and again in November 2005 on independent labels, making the Oct 2006 Universal Records release unofficially dubbed V3. Now, Daniel is somewhat of a purist. He prefers the gritty sound of the independent version versus the crisper if not slightly over-produced major label release. I however don't care what version is playing, I'll dance to either. I'd wager you will too.

French Class!

After a stint working with the bossa nova /new wave group Nouvelle Vague (who's rendition of the Blondie hit "Heart of Glass" is included on my covers project), French chanteuse Camille Dalmais released her second album, Le Fil in 2005. This is not just your typical sophmore slump, instead it shines as an avant-garde album with a truly inspired concept behind it. Le Fil literally means "The Thread", a concept embodied as a single tone that runs the course of the entire album. A constant string that pulls you from one song to the next as they blend seamlessly together. The other remarkable thing about this record is that Camile uses her voice to give the album its atmosphere. She relies on a combination of beatvoxing, snarling and even spitting to be her band. The only real intrumentation is the use of a bass and keyboard on some tracks. Not that it matters. She could have a full brass band behind her and it couldn't distract from her beautiful voice. And don't let the fact that the album is primarily in an other language dissuade you from giving it a chance. I promise you'll be singing in phonetic french by the 3rd listen. Enjoy. Amish.

Ok, well technically she never said that. Or at least it's never been proven.

I am ridiculously excited to see this film. The first time I saw the teaser trailer




and heard "Age of Consent" I knew that this was something I could not miss. Sofia Coppola seems to have done it again. Another beautiful motion picture with a fantastic soundtrack!

Now this is a music blog, and we'll get to that, but 1st I think a short history lesson is in order.

"Maria Antonia Josefa Johanna von Habsburg-Lothringen (November 2, 1755 – October 16, 1793), known to history as Marie Antoinette, was born an Archduchess of Austria, and later became Queen of France. She was the daughter of the Holy Roman Emperor Francis I and Maria Theresa of Austria. She was married to Louis XVI of France at age 14 and was the mother of "lost dauphin" Louis XVII. Marie Antoinette is perhaps best remembered for her legendary (and, some modern historians say, exaggerated) excesses, and for her death: she was executed by guillotine at the height of the French Revolution in 1793, for the crime of treason."

The movie however is not a typical bio-pic. Several liberties are taken to modernize the story and make it feel more relevant. The most notable of which are Marie's style of dress and the soundtrack. Sofia Coppola had spanish shoe designer Manolo Blahnik create hundreds of specially made shoes for the film. SJP is surely furious somewhere. Kirsten Dunst even rocks a pair of Converse. Overall the look is much more stylized than traditional 18th century. Which I am not only ok with, I am thankful for.

The soundtrack also has a very fresh sound. It contains both modern "8o's" tunes with classical Baroquemusice. Sofia Coppola's previous films all had fantastic music. The Virgin Suicides was scored by french band, Air, while Lost in Translation had bands like Phoenix, Air (again), and My Bloody Valentine, so I'm not at all surprised by how much I enjoy this score. Speaking of Phoenix, they actually appear in the film as musicians at Le Petit Trianon.

Anyway, I've decided to lay out some of my favorite songs from the soundtrack. Give 'em a listen, and go see this film! It's definitely on my list of things to do this weekend.


Siouxsie and the Banshees - Hong Kong Garden

While I'm certainly not a die hard fan of Siouxsie, I can honestly say that I really like this song. It's upbeat and, with the addition of the strings on the intro, it's definitely how I'd kick off my party in the 1700's.


Aphex Twin - Jynweythek

This track is breathtaking. Delicate andstaccatoo, I expect it to be playing out of a music box. It strums out like a lonely girl, plucked from her home with the weight of a country forced upon her narrow shoulders.

The Radio Dept. - Pulling Our Weight

This is my favorite band of the week. I cannot stop listening to The Radio Dept. tracks from this album. This chorus plays like open air, with only cirrus clouds floating through the space. Absolutely beautiful.

New Order - Ceremony

This track plays in one to the film's trailers and also appears on the soundtrack. I really like the fact that this songs almost skips along. A continuous drum keeps you running through the entire song. I would certainly run through the halls of a palace in a full gown and converse to this song, wouldn't you?


The Strokes - What Ever Happened

What can I really say about this track. It sounds like The Strokes, which is not a bad thing. I really like this song. It's catchy and fun, but there's really nothing new here.

Gang of Four - Natural's Not in It

Gang of Four has really influenced modern music, from Radio 4 to bands like Bloc Party. Dirty guitars, great bass lines, it's all here. Another great up, dancey track to make you party like it's 1774!

Bow Wow Wow - I Want Candy (Kevin Shields Remix)

This is more of a "re-telling" than a traditional remix. It really just sounds like they gave this song a good wash. Scrubbed off all the dirt that's built up over the years and presented a polished 80's gem.


New Order - Age of Consent

This is the songs that plays in the teaser trailer. It unfortunately didn't make it onto the final soundtrack. It's such a great song however that you shouldn't be without it.

I've been trying to put another mix together for weeks now and everytime I think I have it... I don't have it. So while I continue to struggle with that endeavor I've decided to post a few of my favorite songs by one of my favorite artsts.

I had the pleasure of seeing her perform not once, but two times this year, and she's coming back my way this december and I'm certainly going for for a third. If you've never been, seeing Immi live is a really intimate experience. It felt like I was sitting in her living room and she just happened to have three different keyboards and drum machine. The space was warm and inviting, decorated with foliage and christmas lights. It was cozy. The venue was small enough that even though I was in the back of the room it felt like I was involved in a personal conversation with Immi herself. She told us stories about the songs, showed us how she loops her vocals and instuments and played with the voice synthasyzer she uses on "Hide and Seek." She played several songs on a standard piano instead of the keyboard which brought a new delicacy to the music. She even forgot the words mid way through a song and joked about how we'd just have to sit through the whole thing again. I feel confident in saying not a single person minded.

I Don't Want No Scrubs

I let it slide when "Garden State" was released and Zach Braff laid all my personal thoughts and feelings out for all to see. Musically that is. The soundtrack to that movie (which remains one of my favorite movies) contained many of my favorite artists and more than a few of my favorite songs. I came upon the soundtrack for "The Last Kiss" one day while searching for new goodies on itunes. I said to myself "Ok, I'll bite." I opened the page only to see more of my current favorite artists and songs, ones that I've been singing along to for months, years even, just staring back at me. Mocking me. Like your most treasured friend spilling your most gaurded secrets to the new "mean girl" group of friends she's been hanging out with lately. WHAT!?! I'M FINE!!

But I digress...

This cannot be coincidence. There is clearly only one answer. Zach Braff is somehow monitering the music that I am listening to. He has managed to hack into my itunes and is just trying to one up me!! Well not this time Mr. Braff.

I have 8 of the 15 tracks he has put together for this new mixtape, er- soundtrack, already stashed on my itunes and have decided to share them with you. I ordinarily would never post more than a couple songs from a single album, but since I already had these songs in my collection and am not taking them from any one cd I feel no personal shame for sharing it. There I said it.

This is something I've been meaning to do for quite some time but have never felt like I had the right material for. Well, the time has come. One of my best friends put out a cover CD a couple of months ago and being the competitive prick that I am got it into my head to one up her.
